Log Name:  Veritas Enterprise Vault
Source:        Enterprise Vault
Event ID:      8596
Task Category: Directory Service
Level:         Error
Description:
Data decryption has failed.

Caller: Domain\vaultadmin

Cipher text:

 V-437-8596

Cause

The VSA is configured with Domain Admin rights. This could also be caused by an EV server being shut down while the password for the VSA was changed, as would be the case in a DR environment.

Resolution

In the case of the VSA having Domain Admin rights: The Vault Admin account should not be apart of the Domain Admins group, follows the steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Within Active Directory, remove the Domain Admin rights from the VSA.

  2. Ensure the VSA has the proper permissions to the Exchange 2010 server.

  3. Restart the Exchange Mailbox Archiving Task.

In the case of the server being shut down when the VSA password was changed:

  1. Stop all EV services

  2. Manually change the password for each of the EV services using the services.msc console

  3. Start the EV services

  4. Open the EV Admin Console and property the Directory object (third from the top, on the left)

  5. In the Service Account tab, set the new password then click OK

    • This is needed to change the password elsewhere in the operating system and on other EV servers

    • This process may take a while if other servers are not reachable in the case of a DR

Issue/Introduction

The Exchange Mailbox Archiving Task fails immediately after startup and throws Event ID 8596 errors in the Veritas Event Log.
