Cause

When EV performs an archive run against Exchange 2010/2013 Mailbox with the Exchange SingleItemRecoveryEnabled variable set to True, and the number of days to retain Deleted Items is set, the the size of the Mailbox on disk will grow, rather than shrink, as user maiboxes are archived.

This behavior is caused due to how Exchange with this value set keeps previous versions of items for data recovery.  When the EV Archiving Task archives items within a mailbox, EV places attributes on each message as it is read and altered (placed into pending), then again as it is replaced with a shortcut.  A mailbox with the Exchange 2010 SingleItemRecoveryEnabled value set will retain copies of previous versions of messages to prevent data loss (due to SingleItemRecoveryEnabled being turned on), so the total size of the Mailbox on disk will grow to encompass the previous versions of these messages.

Resolution

Disable SingleItemRecoveryEnabled, or lower the number of days to keep Deleted Items.

Issue/Introduction

While the EV Mailbox Archiving Task is actively archiving items from user mailboxes on Exchange 2010/2013 server, the apparent size of the mailbox appears to increase in size rather than decrease. This can inadvertently cause a mailbox to exceed Quota as well as alter the amount archived if EV is set for Quota-based archiving.
