To create a custom NIST list it will be necessary to add the MD5 Hash value of the excluded file.

1. Create a text file and call it “my_nist.csv”

2. Using a text editor, open up “my_nist.csv” and add the md5 hash values of the files you want to include in your custom NIST list

3. When done, save the file

4. Create a directory on the eDiscovery appliance where the system will store the custom NIST list information, for example: “D:\CW\custom_NIST_dir”

5. Login to eDiscoveryl as a System Manager and go to System > Settings > Locations

6. Use the “Browse…” button under “Known File Filtering” to point to “D:\CW\custom_NIST_dir”

7. Click the “Save” button

8. Go to System > Known Files

9. Click “Add” and type in a Name, Description (optional), and click the ellipsis to select the “my_nist.csv” file that was created in step #1

Issue/Introduction

Collected document sets often contain many files which are not user generated but are instead common application programs, help files, or DLLs. These files are identified and tracked by the National Software Reference Library and commonly known as the “NIST List.” In addition, most companies have standard software images that they use for creating desktops, laptops, and servers, and often want to exclude those files from e-discovery since they are not relevant. The Veritas eDiscovery Platform provides the ability for users to exclude both the standard NSRL (NIST list) files and to upload company-specific file hash lists into the system. Once the known file lists have been set up by the administrator, matching documents can be excluded with a single click while setting up a document source. Note: Excluding documents on a NIST list occurs when adding a source.
