The Enterprise Vault Placeholder Service on the file server will return the following informational message in the Event Viewer log after a service restart. 

Event ID: 8623 Cannot connect to the Enterprise Vault Directory service. |Check the Enterprise Vault event log on EVSERVER to find the cause of the problem.

Cause

The file server is unable to connect to the EV server properly. 

The following are possible causes to this issue:

1.  Windows Firewall has been enabled on the EV server.

2.  DCOM port restrictions have been configured. 

3.  IPv6 is enabled on the EV server. 

Resolution

Check the configuration for the items below:

1.  Disable the Windows Firewall or configure it to allow communication.

2.  Remove or increase the DCOM port restrictions.

3.  Disable IPv6 on the EV server. 

 

 

 

Issue/Introduction

Unable to edit the volume policy due to the file server being unable to communicate to the Enterprise Vault Directory Service on the EV server.
