Cause

This issue is caused by the following Metadata in the EML file which causes eDiscovery to create a file called winmail.dat in place of the original attachments:

Content-Type: application/ms-tnef; name="winmail.dat"

Resolution

To resolve this issue there are two options:

Option 1:

  1. Break out the attachments as separate items
  2. Process the items into eDiscovery
  3. Document families will not be maintained in this option

Option2:

  1. Use a third party program to convert the EML files to MSG or PST
  2. Process the new MSG files into eDiscovery
  3. Document families will be maintained in this option
 

 

Issue/Introduction

After processing an EML file that has attachments, a file may be produced that replaces the attachments in the Analysis & Review module. This file is called winmail.dat.
