Figure 1
Cause
Self-signed certificates do not have a publicly recognized trust chain. These are mainly used for testing, development and troubleshooting, as the certificate will only be recognized as valid by the server it is hosted on.
Attempting to view the secured domain externally would receive an error that the certificate is not valid, as it has not been approved nor is recognized by a known public Certification Authority.
Resolution
Deployments that require stringent security and/or those that wish to avoid browser warnings should obtain and install a certificate from a known provider.
The steps in this article are only intended to suppress the warning messages presented by self-signed certificates.
Step 1: Verify the status of the certificate:
- Click Certificate Error in the address bar and click View Certificates
- A small pop-up window will open. Navigate to the Certification Path tab and review the Certification status: This CA Root certificate is not trusted because it is not in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store.
Step 2: Install the certificate on the client browser:
- Click Certificate Error in the address bar and navigate to the General tab
- Click Install Certificate... > Click Next
- Select Place all certificates in the following store and click the Browse button.
- Select Trusted Root Certification Authorities > Click OK > Click Next.
- Click Finish, review the Security Warning and click Yes.
- Acknowledge the message The import was successful by clicking OK.
- Close all browser windows to clear the cache.
- Re-start the browser and navigate to the Clearwell login page.
After local installation, eDiscovery clients should no longer receive these browser certificate warnings.
