Enterprise Vault reads the raw message data from the Exchange mailbox, archives the email and attempts to convert the content of the email and its attachments.  This is done to allow for searching the content of emails and attachments.  Enterprise Vault attempts to convert known file types to text or html depending upon the settings configured within EV.  When an email contains encrypted or non-convertable content EV may be unable to display a preview within the search application, in place of this EV displays a message denoting that the content cannot be shown.  The message can still be located searching on its attributes but not its contents.

EV 10 and below will display an informative message similar to the following:

File type .MSG

Encrypted message content the web browser displays: "Content is encrypted and cannot be shown".

File type .MPG

File type (.MPG) is not recognized by converters the Web Browser displays: "Preview is not available. Go back to the search results and click the download icon to view the content. Reason: File type not recognized by converters."

EV 11 and above, using the new search application, will display a message similar to the following:

"No preview of this item is available. You can download the original item."
