When archiving items that have Unicode characters in the subject line, they can show as ?????. To resolve this issue the Enterprise Vault server settings need to be changed to use the correct Unicode language (This has been tested on Russian Cyrillic).

The following information below shows how an incorrectly configured environment may be configured :-

Server regional settings as follows :-

EV server

Operating System -  English

Locale - Russian

Language for Non-Unicode programs - English

Outlook/MAPI - Russian

Internet Explorer - English

Desktop(client)

Operating System - Russian

Locale - Russian

Language for Non-Unicode programs - Russian

Outlook - Russian

Internet Explorer - Russian

Exchange Server

Operating System - Russian

Locale - Russian

Language for Non-Unicode programs - Russian

Outlook - N/A

Internet Explorer - Russian

This environment allowed manual archiving to work as expected but scheduled archiving would produce the issue of ?????? replacing the Cyrillic text.

Resolution :-

The "Language for non-Unicode program" on the Enterprise Vault server must be set to Russian and not English. Please see the following Microsoft article which has more information on this:
