Invalid Custodian:

This error occurs when a search creator / reviewer tries to select a Custodian or target that already has been populated in the To or From field(s) while the option "Use Historical Information for Custodians and Custodian Groups" is selected.  The custodian noted in the error is either not a historical custodian or does not fit the date range specified.

The "Use Historical Information for Custodians and Custodian Groups" option allows the use of both active and deactivated Custodians or Custodian Groups in the search criteria.  If this option is unchecked, Discovery Accelerator uses only the currently active set of custodians, and groups.  Any deactivated users and groups are excluded from the search.

 With the option selected, any deactivated Custodian or Custodian Group that was active during the date span of the search will be available for selection into the search criteria.  When a search is configured to select Custodians or Custodian Groups prior to specifying a date span for the search, the specification of the date span can cause deactivated Custodians to not be valid for that date span, which can also cause the error to be displayed.

Follow the steps below to ensure only valid Custodians or Custodian Groups are selected based on the search date span:

1. From the existing search criteria, where the error occurs, click on OK to clear the error message.
2. Remove the custodian noted in the error from the search criteria.
3. Confirm the Date range is specified as needed for finding historical information for custodians or custodian groups.
4. Click on the "Targets..." button. 
5. Select the Custodians or Custodian Groups content using the drop down menu.
6.  Scroll through the appropriate custodian(s) for the date span of the search.  Only valid custodians should be listed.
7. Select the desired custodian(s) by double clicking on their name(s) to add them to the criteria.
8. Click on the Save button to save the selection of Custodian(s) and / or Custodian Group(s).
9. Fill out other search criteria as needed.
10. Click on the Save button to run the search.
