How to disable Enterprise Vault (EV) collections

Cause

By design, if collections is enabled for an NTFS partition it cannot be disabled

Resolution

The Enterprise Vault collector combines multiple files on the Vault Store partition into much larger "collection files", which may give a significant improvement in backup times. The collection files are standard Windows CAB files. Collections can be configured from the Vault Admin Console by going to the properties of the vault store partitions as shown in Figure 1.

Once Enterprise Vault collections are enabled, they cannot be disabled; however, to stop the process of collecting the files, the following steps can be performed as a workaround:
 
Option 1. Change the time difference between Start and End time, which will restrict the collection of files.
 

Note: Temporarily disabling collections with this method disables the daily collection management process, possibly resulting in "stale" ARCHDVS files that can quickly fill the storage medium. Careful consideration of the resulting stale ARCHDVS, ARCHDVF, ARCHDVSSP, ARCHDVSCC files should be taken in order to make best use of storage.

  1. Login to EV server with Vault Service Account login credentials or user with equivalent rights to storage.
     
  2. In the Vault Administration Console (VAC) go to the Vault Store partition which is enabled for EV Collections.
     
  3. Right click on the Vault Store Partition, select Properties.
     
  4. Click on Collections tab.
     
  5. Under Use collection files, confirm that the check box is grayed out.
     
  6. Under Daily file collection times, change End at to make 1 minute difference between start and end time as shown above in  Figure 1.

    eg. Start at 10.00.00 AM
          End  at 10.01.00 AM

    By making the above change, it will restrict the collection of the files and therefore the DVS files on that Vault Store Partition will not be collected in the .cab file.

     

Option 2. Change the Age to maximum allowed, which will restrict the collection from collecting DVS files which are NOT older than 999 Years.

  1. Login to Enterprise Vault Server with Vault Service Account login credentials or user with equivalent rights to storage.
     
  2. In the Vault Administration Console (VAC) go to the Vault Store partition which is enabled for EV Collections.
     
  3. Right click on the Vault Store Partition, select Properties.
     
  4. Click on Collections tab.
     
  5. Under Age at which files will be collected, change the Collect files older than to 999 Years.
