How to move a case template from one Clearwell eDiscovery appliance to another

1. Log into the source appliance using Remote Desktop Connection using one of the eDiscovery source accounts with local administrator access.

2. Launch a Windows Command Prompt (cmd.exe) in the eDiscovery application home folder, D:\CW\v## is default and v## is the installed version number.
    a.  Execute the following: b admin-client casemanager backupCase "" ""
    b.  Replace with the name of the template exactly as shown in the Cases -> Templates view in the eDiscovery UI, and
        with a descriptive name to identify the backup.

3. To determine the backup location for either the source or destination appliance, login to the eDiscovery UI as a user with a System Manager role
    a.  Navigate Support Features > Property Browser
    b.  In the Pattern to Match field, enter esa.case.backupDir and click Submit
    c.  The output is the parent location for case and template backups for that appliance.

4. The entire template backup that was created in step 2 needs to be copied to the case backup location of the destination appliance.
    a.  This copy should be done using a forensically safe utility such as Robocopy or by using a file archiving/compression software such as WinZip.
    b.  Navigate to the source appliance's case backup location identified in step 3 and copy the template backup to the destination appliance's case backup directory root folder.

5. To restore the template backup to the destination appliance, log in to the eDiscovery UI as a user with System Manager rights
    a.  Navigate to the All Processing page and open the Archives tab.
    b. Click the check box next to the name of the migrated template backup and click the "Restore" button.  If this is a distributed architecture environment, restore the template backup to the cluster master appliance.

 

Issue/Introduction

Case templates are very useful as they allow custom (non-default) values to be set on case creation. If there are multiple appliances, it is possible to copy case templates from one appliance to another. This Article provides step-by-step instructions on how this is accomplished.
