Error Message

An error occurred while attempting to bring the resource CLUSTEREV-EnterpriseVaultServerInstance' online. Error code 0x800700c1

Cause

In order to determine what could be causing this issue, cluster logs needs to be enabled.

It has been observed that one cause could be the following DNS error:

DNS operation refused. (9005)

When a MSCS cluster failover occurs, the active node updates the cluster DNS A record with the active node's IP address. A DNS issue could be affecting the Microsoft Cluster ability to perform a correct failover regardless of any cluster application running on top of it.

The cluster name resource which has been added to the DNS prior to setup active passive cluster (or any type) needs to be updated by the physical nodes on behalf of the resource record itself. When the active node owns the resources it want to update the A record in the DNS database and DNS record which was created will not allow any authenticated user to update the DNS record with the same owner.

Resolution

A DNS issue is not related to Enterprise Vault. Windows Administrators and/or Microsoft Technical Support should be engaged to confirm that MSCS  failover works properly. In order to resolve this DNS error, the following procedure might be performed:

  1. Delete the existing A record for the cluster name.
  2. Re-create the A record. Make sure select the box says Allow any authenticated user to update DNS record with the same owner name
