V-437-4214
V-437-4218

Cause

This is caused by an invalid license. Some situations where this occurs include:

  • No license file can be found
  • A license file is found but it is invalid
  • Multiple license files are found and one of them is invalid

An license can be invalid because the file has been corrupted, because its XML is malformed or missing key information, or because it is a temporary license that has expired.

Resolution

To install an additional license:

  1. Place the new Veritas license file (.slf) in the root of the Enterprise Vault installation folder (typically  C:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault).
  2. Restart the Enterprise Vault Admin Service.
  3. On startup, the Admin Service detects any license files in the Enterprise Vault installation folder and installs them. It then saves a copy to  the Installed Licenses subfolder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault\Installed Licenses).
  4. Verify that the license information report in the Veritas Enterprise Vault event  log (Event ID 4213) properly lists all the products and features for which the server is licensed.
  5. For a multi-server Enterprise Vault deployment, repeat the steps  on each Enterprise Vault server.

If the 4218 Events persist after installing a new license, it may be necessary to remove a conflicting invalid license from the system. To do so:

  1. Navigate to the folder %ProgramData%\Symantec Shared\Licenses. This is the folder from which the Admin Service reads the installed licenses at startup.
  2. Veritas license files (.slf) can be opened in a text editor such as Notepad to view their contents.
  3. Review the existing license files to determine which ones are invalid. Look for corrupt files, expired temporary licenses, and malformed XML.
  4. Remove any invalid licenses from this folder. Alternatively, remove all EV licenses and add back the known good licenses.
  5. Restart the Admin Service and the 4218 Events should no longer occur.

Issue/Introduction

When the Enterprise Vault Admin Service starts up, it logs an Event 4214 in the Veritas Enterprise Vault log in the Event Viewer. When an Enterprise Vault archiving task starts up, it logs and Event 4218 in the Veritas Enterprise Vault log in the Event Viewer.
