Cause

Note: The described 'missing' Exchange 2003 recipients from the Journaled Recipients section only occurs when the Author is external to the organization or serviced by an Exchange 2003 server AND the message contains BCC recipients.

The described 'missing' Exchange 2003 recipients from the Journaled Recipients section is expected behavior and is derived from how Exchange 2007 and greater servers create the Header Information for the message.

The screen shots below use fictitious accounts to provide a visual of the header information differences between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 or greater servers when handling the header information from the same email message.

Figure 1 shows the message from an Exchange 2003 server.  Notice the full list of recipients in the right bottom pane.

Figure 1. Sample Exchange 2003 Journal Report

Figure 2 shows the message from an Exchange 2010 server.  Notice the list only shows the Exchange 2007/2010 recipients from the TO, CC and BCC fields.

Workaround:

Option 1:
- Use the captured messages from the Exchange server to view the complete list of BCC recipients.

Option 2:
- Use only 2007 or later Exchange servers within the organization.

Issue/Introduction

The Journal Recipient section in the review pane is visible when a message is journaled from an Exchange server. The Journal Recipient section will display the SMTP address of all recipients (TO/CC/BCC) as it is based on the Journal Report that Exchange creates to contain the original message as an attachment and lists the email addresses of the Author and all recipients, regardless of the recipient field in which they are contained.
