SQL Server Connectivity

Passed

The list of SQL Server computers or listeners below shows the network protocols that are
supported by each server. Enterprise Vault requires at least one of the network protocols to
be supported on each SQL Server.

SQL1: NamedPipes (NO), TCP/IP (YES)

Cause

This is expected behavior.  When the Deployment Scanner runs, it checks for all communications protocols that could be used between the EV and SQL Servers.  The 2 protocols specifically checked are Named Pipes and TCP/IP.  Either protocol would work, but TCP/IP is preferred and is the only default enabled protocol in new SQL Server installations.  Named Pipes must be enabled separately in order to be used.

Resolution

Enterprise Vault does not require Named Pipes to be enabled as it can use either Named Pipes or TCP/IP. Based on limited testing, the disabling of Named Pipes caused no discernible impact of product functionality. As a result, Veritas does not believe there to be any issues with having Named Pipes disabled on the SQL Server used to host Enterprise Vault, Compliance Accelerator or Discovery Accelerator databases.

Note that this configuration has not been officially tested and, therefore, there is the possibility of unknown issues occurring. If having Named Pipes disabled proves to be the cause of any issue, a product enhancement would need to be raised to look into what changes are required in order to support this particular configuration, should the issues occurring prove to be directly related to the aforementioned configuration.

Veritas recommends a thorough testing cycle of any changes that do not conform to standard, default implementations, to ensure no detrimental impact is incurred by these changes.

Issue/Introduction

When the Enterprise Vault Deployment Scanner runs checks for the SQL Server specified to host EV databases, a "NO" is displayed for the Named Pipes protocol. The Veritas Quick Assist tool will also display the "NO" status for the Named Pipes protocol.
