Description

Veritas eDiscovery is capable of using other e-mails in a discussion thread to approximate if a reply or forwarded message existed in the discussion but was not included in the original collection. This is called a Derived Message. Derived Messages are items that technically do not exist but are displayed in the "Discussions" tab while in Analysis and Review to flesh out the history of a discussion. The information in a Derived Message is generated by looking at the Referenced Text included on other messages in the same thread.

Derived Messages can be search via DOC ID the same way any other item in the corpus is searched. To find the Derived Messages DOC ID and search for the item use the following steps:

  1. Log in to Clearwell and go to the "Analysis and Review" section of the case in question
  2. Select the "Discussions" tab
  3. When the Discussions are displayed select one by clicking on its "Title"
  4. In the Discussion Thread tab the Derived Messages icon will display as slightly translucent and the checkbox will be grayed out
  5. Select the Derived Message by clicking on its name
  6. The DOC ID will be displayed to the right along with the message "(Derived Message)"
  7. Copy this DOC ID and go to "Advanced Search"
  8. In "Advanced Search" expand the "Identifiers" section
  9. Paste the DOC ID into he "Document IDs" field
  10. Click "Run Search" at the top or bottom
  11. Make sure to click back to the Documents tab after running the search.

This will display the Derived Message like any other item in the corpus. Please be advised that Derived Messages cannot be exported, tagged, cached, printed or placed into folders since the items technically do not exist.
