Description

In Clearwell eDiscovery, documents and attachments to those documents have a familial relationship. Using an email with an attached PDF file, for example, the email is the parent document and the PDF is the child document.

Prior to Clearwell 8.0, the above family relationship cannot be broken. For example, searching for terms that exist in a child attachment, but not a parent document, will return both documents. In 8.0, Clearwell begins to index documents on the item level, allowing for more flexibility in exports in general and the ability to export parent OR child documents without having to automatically export the other.

To further illustrate this, please review the below screenshot of the Analysis & Review module in Clearwell 7.1.2
An email document with attachment has been selected for this example. In Simple Detail view, we can see the parent email and circled in red, the child attachment MS Word Document.
Note the checkbox to the left of the parent email and the lack of a checkbox next to the child attachment. This is because the child attachment cannot be selected by itself and must be worked on (exported, redacted, etc) with the parent email.

Below is a screen shot of the same parent email and child attachment and the same Simple Detail view as seen in the Analysis & Review module of Clearwell 8.0.
Notice the child attachment (in the red box) presented in Clearwell 8.0 has much more detail by default and, more importantly, has a check box to the left of the document itself. This means we can review, export, redact, etc the child document independently of the parent.

To perform a Production export of a child attachment without the parent document (or parent without the child), perform the following steps.

1. Select the documents you wish to export and copy them to a Productions folder. Lock the production folder.
2. Once copied, select the individual times you wish to export. In the screenshot below, I have selected the MS Word document attachment only.
3. Once the desired items are selected, Perform the Production export as desired.
