Description

By default, Enterprise Vault (EV) Compliance Accelerator (CA) and Discovery Accelerator (DA) specify the Universal Resource Locator (URL) of http://localhost/ReportServer for the path to the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) report template upload site, which usually is not the correct address to the Reporting Services site as SSRS is typically installed on a separate server from CA and DA.

The result of this default URL is to get the error 'Disconnected from Reports Server' when attempting to upload the report templates for CA or DA.

In order to fix this, the correct setup steps for Reporting Services must be completed.

Using SQL Server 2008 as an example:

1. Confirm the SQL Server Reporting Service has been installed and configured.

  1. Log onto the SQL Server Reporting Service server using an account with local Administrator privileges, such as the Vault Service Account (VSA).
  2. Open the Internet Explorer browser.
  3. Enter the URL http://SQLServerName/ReportServer, replacing SQLServerName with the name of the SQL Service Reporting Service server.
  4. If a web page is displayed that says at the bottom: 'Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version x.x.x.x', similar to as in Figure 1 below, the reporting services are installed and working properly. Note that the version reported is the SQL Server version, not the EV, CA or DA version.
  5. Skip to Step 6 if SSRS is working properly.
  6. Continue with Step 2 if SSRS is not working properly.

Figure 1.  Successful access to the ReportServer site on the SSRS server.

2. Confirm that SQL Server Reporting Service has been installed on the SSRS server.

  1. Log onto the SSRS server with an account that has local Administrator privileges.
  2. Click the Start button.
  3. Select the All Programs option.
  4. Select the SQL Server option.
  5. Select the SQL Server Configuration Tools option.
  6. Look for the Reporting Services Configuration Manager application as shown in Figure 2 below.
  7. Skip to Step 5 if this application is present.
  8. Continue to Step 3 if this application is not present.

3. Install the SQL Server Reporting Service.

  1. Log onto the server on which the SQL Server Reporting Service is to be installed using an account with at least local Administrator privileges, if not already completed from Step 2 above.
  2. Click on the SQL Server Installation Center (64-bit) application, shown in Figure 2 above.
  3. Click on the Installation option as shown in Figure 3 below.
  4. Click on the New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing instance option as also shown in Figure 3 below.
  5. When prompted for the SQL Server media, browse to the media and click the OK button.
  6. Click the OK button in the next screen as shown in Figure 4 below.
  7. Click the Install button as shown in Figure 5 below.
  8. Click the Next button as shown in Figure 6 below.
  9. Be sure the radio button for the option Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server, as shown in Figure 7 below, is present and selected.  If it is not present, a different version of the SQL Server media may be selected.
  10. Click the Next button.
  11. On the Feature Selection page should be the features already installed shown in gray, as shown in Figure 8 below.
  12. Click the Reporting Services option to place a check mark in its check box, also as shown in Figure 8 below.
  13. Click the Next button.
  14. Click the Finish button to complete the SSRS installation.

4. Test the SQL Server Reporting Service installation.

  1. Once Step 3 has been completed, repeat Step 1 to determine if the SSRS site is available and the screen received is similar to Figure 1 above.
  2. If the SSRS site is available, skip to Step 6.
  3. If the SSRS site is not available, continue to step 5.

5. Configure SQL Server Reporting Service.

  1. Log onto the SSRS server using an account with at least local Administrator privileges, if not already logged on as such.
  2. Click the Start button,
  3. Select the All Programs option.
  4. Select the Microsoft SQL Server option.
  5. Select the Configuration Tools option.
  6. Double click on the Reporting Services Configuration Manager application.
  7. Click the Connect button when prompted in order to connect to the database instance.
  8. Referring to Figure 9 below, if the Reporting Service is stopped, click the Start button.
  9. If the service will not start, click the Service Account link in the left pane to display the Service Account information as shown in Figure 10 below.
  10. If a built-in account is to be used, ensure the radio button for the Use built-in account option is selected and the appropriate account, such as the Network Service account, is selected.
  11. If a non-built-in account is to be used as the Service Account, ensure the radio button for the Use another account option is selected and the user account's credentials are entered into the Account (Domain\user) and Password fields.
  12. If any change is made on this page, click the Apply button to save the change.
  13. Click the Web Service URL link in the left pane to show the Virtual Directory configuration settings, as shown in Figure 11 below.
  14. If the Virtual Directory is already set to ReportServer but that site still cannot be opened, change ReportServer to something like ReportServer1 and, without applying, change it back to ReportServer.  Note: If SQL Server Reporting Service is installed as a named instance, the Virtual Directory name should reflect the named instance.  For example, if installed with an instance named 'KVSEV', the Virtual Directory name could be 'ReportServer$KVSEV'.
  15. Click on the Apply button to setup the ReportServer virtual directory.  Note that the bottom of the Web Service URL page will display the URL to be used by applications.
  16. Click the Database link in the left pane to show the Database configuration settings as shown in Figure 12 below.
  17. If no database is specified, click the Change Database
  18. As shown in Figure 13 below, a new SSRS database can be created or an existing SSRS database can be specified.
  19. If a SSRS database already exists,
    1. Click the radio button for the Choose an existing report server database option.
    2. Click the Next button.
    3. Select the existing SSRS database.
    4. Click the OK button.
  20. If a SSRS database needs to be created,
    1. Click the radio button for the Create a new report server database option.
    2. Click the Next button.
    3. Follow the prompts to specify the name of the new SSRS database.
    4. Click the OK button to complete the database creation process.
  21. Click the Report Manager URL link in the left pane.
  22. Repeat the steps completed for the Web Service URL link, modifying the directory name from Reports to Reports1 and changing it back to Reports before clicking the Apply button.
  23. Access to the https://localhost/ReportServer/ site as shown in Figure 1 above should now succeed.

NOTE: If SSRS has been configured using the SSL, ensure the line in  rsreportserver.config is set to 2.  e.g. . Typically, this file can be found in the folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS13.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer\. on the SQL Server running the Reporting Service.

6. Confirm accessibility to the SSRS site from the CA or DA server.

  6. Enter the VSA credentials in the User Name and Password fields.
  7. Click the Upload Reports button to connect to the ReportServer virtual directory and begin uploading the report templates.
  8. An upload confirmation message should appear after a short time that reports the success (or failure) of the upload of the templates.

Figure 15.  Sample EVBAAdmin Upload Report Templates configuration page.  Note that the URL used should match the URL noted in the Web Service URL page of the SQL Server Configuration utility.

The report of a successful upload of the report templates to the ReportServer site indicates the SQL Server Reporting Services are properly installed and configured.
