Description

The MetaDataStore (MDS), or Fast Browsing feature introduced in Enterprise Vault (EV) 11 allows EV Search to yield results that are not yet fully indexed when indexing is asynchronous from ingestion.  This is intentional, and is designed as a convenience for searching newly-archived items.

For example, if archiving to a WORM compliant-storage device, or a Cloud-based storage device, passing savesets to the storage device can take time.  If MDS is enabled, EV Search can fetch results for savesets that still only reside in EV's Storage Queue, or the original location, or both; but have not yet been placed on the storage device.

A telltale sign that MDS has yielded un-indexed and/or un-stored savesets is if no preview is available for those items when highlighting them in EV search.

An important cautionary note should be acknowledged:  EV will behave in the manner it is configured with these items in their current state.  If EV is configured to allow user deletions, but the storage device does not (a WORM device, for example), then a user or administrator's attempts to delete Search results that are not yet indexed or stored will properly succeed, as the WORM device is not consulted in that deletion process.  In other words, savesets can be deleted from EV's local Storage Queue even if the partition those savesets are intended for is set not to allow those deletions, since the storage device has not yet received the items.
