Cause

Setting up a WinNAS without an agent limits the data you can collect.  Only scanning of metadata will be available without an agent.

Installing an agent allows you to capture the file system audit events for changes made by the users, giving you a much better insight into how the data is being used.

Resolution

To convert the filer to an agent based filer perform the following steps:

  1. Install the Data Insight WinNAS agent to the filer. You can install directly or silently via command line using the varfiles.  You cannot push the agent from the UI
  2. After the installation is finished, proceed with the registration of the node as prompted
    1. NOTE: When registering the node, input the Collector information in the field for Management Server/Collector FQDN
  3. After the registration is complete, confirm the check box is selected to start the Data Insight services, and select OK.
  4. You will be prompted to Configure the Windows Filer after registration. There is no need to configure at this point, cancel this screen.
  5. In the Data Insight UI, navigate to Settings - Inventory - Filers and select the filer
  6. Select Edit on the filer configuration page.
  7. Select the radio button to Use Agent - confirm the agent is listed in the box below.
  8. Select the check box to Let Data Insight manage agents automatically.
  9. In the Event Monitoring section, select the checkbox to Enable File System Event Monitoring.
  10. Save the configuration.

The filer is now configured for Event Monitoring with an agent installed and the historical properties of the filer are preserved in Data Insight.

Issue/Introduction

Once a WinNAS filer is configured in DI without an agent there is no apparent way to add the agent without deleting and re-adding the filer back.
