Description

Error Message

There is no error message.  The behavior is an Outlook behavior and can be demonstrated completely outside of Enterprise Vault by sending a calendar item from Exchange to Gmail account over SMTP and then downloading the item in .eml format from Gmail.

Copying the .eml file to a workstation where Outlook is installed and double clicking the .eml file. then checking the Inbox for the item, a copy will be there and shown as unread.

Cause

This is a Microsoft Outlook behavior that occurs when sending calendar items over SMTP and then subsequently opening the resulting .eml file with Outlook.

Resolution

If more information/explanation is required, a support ticket would have to be created with Microsoft.

Issue/Introduction

When opening archived .eml files that are calendar items, the item will be saved in the Outlook Inbox folder as an unread message. This behavior has been seen in .eml files generated in the following circumstances:
  • Discovery Accelerator: When attempting to open EV for SMTP Archived emails which are stored as .eml files.
  • When exporting EV for SMTP Archived email from Enterprise Vault Search.
  • When performing a "dump saveset" of an EV server for SMTP archived email.
  • Veritas Alta eDiscovery. The same behavior will occur when exporting items to .eml files.
This behavior is unique to opening files of the .eml format that are Calendar items. Calendar items in .msg format will not automatically save to the Inbox.
