Enterprise Vault (EV) Compliance Accelerator (CA) and Discovery Accelerator (DA) use Background Tasks to run the various processes that allow CA/DA features to work. Background Tasks reside at the server level (Server's Background Tasks or SBTs) and at the Customer level (Customer's Background Tasks or CBTs). Examples of such features include:
- Controlling and processing threads used to run Searches, Exports, etc.
- Synchronising EV Vault Stores, Archives and Indices.
- CA Employee and DA Custodian synchronisation with Active Directory (AD) and/or Domino Directory.
- Running Immediate Searches. Note - Scheduled Searches will still run if the Customer's Background Task is stopped.
- Running Exports.
- Applying and removing Legal Hold (DA only).
- Processing Analytics (DA only).
- Processing Hotword Analysis (CA only).
Under normal circumstances, the Background Tasks are in a Running status and do not require any manual intervention. Restarting the Enterprise Vault Accelerator Manager Service (EVAMS) will stop all Background Tasks and should return the Background Tasks to the status they were in prior to the service restart. To determine the status of the Background Tasks, access the EVBAAdmin administration website, typically at http://
To review the Server's Background Tasks:
1. Browse to the EVBAAdmin administration website.
2. Click the Accelerator server.
3. Determine if the following are checked (enabled) or unchecked (disabled) for the Accelerator Server:
3.1. Enable Customers' service: Enables or disables the Accelerator server's ability to host Customers.
3.2. Enable Analytics' service: Enables or disables the Analytics Service for all Discovery Accelerator customers.
3.3. Enable Customer's tasks: Specifies whether users can perform activities across all Customers. If disabled, only automatic tasks, such as Scheduled Searches, will run.
To review the Customer's Background Tasks:
1. Browse to the EVBAAdmin administration website.
2. Expand the Accelerator server | Click the Accelerator Customer.
3. Determine the status listed for Customer's Tasks. The Customer's Tasks specifies whether users can perform activities in the Customer. If disabled, only automatic tasks, such as Scheduled Searches, will run. The available statuses are Starting, Running, Stopping, Stopped.
There may be occasions where the Background Tasks need to be manually started or restarted. This is usually required when the Accelerators exhibit unusual or unexpected behaviour, such as no Archive and/or user synchronisation, issues running Searches or Exports, issues with Legal Holds not applying or removing, etc. A good starting point for such investigations is to review the Background Tasks and verify they are started or in a hung state.
Restating the EVAMS does not typically start a stopped Background Task or restart a hung Background Task - an EVAMS restart will return the Tasks to their state that was present before the restart. A stopped Background Task should be started and then the feature in question should be tested. If a Background Task is hung, there are no visual symptoms of the hung state. The only option is to restart the Background Tasks.
To restart the Server Background Tasks:
1. Browse to the EVBAAdmin administration website.
2. Right-click the Accelerator server | Properties | De-select all Background Tasks: Enable Customers service, Enable Analytics service (DA only), Enable Customers tasks | OK. Note the Enable Customers service Task will automatically re-select.
3. Click OK and monitor the Current Status pane until Enable Analytics service and Enable Customers tasks show Stopped.
4. Then right-click the Accelerator server | Properties | Select all de-selected Background Tasks | OK | Monitor the Current Status pane until all tasks show Running.
5. Repeat for each Server as needed.
To restart the Customers Background Tasks:
1. Browse to the EVBAAdmin administration website.
2. Expand the Accelerator server | Right-click the Accelerator Customer | Properties | De-select Enable Customer's tasks | OK | Click on the Customer and monitor the Current Status pane until Customers tasks shows Stopped.
3. Then right-click the Accelerator Customer | Properties | Select Enable Customer's tasks | OK | Click on the Customer and monitor the Current Status pane until Customers tasks shows Running.
4. Repeat for each Customer on each server as needed.
