Error Message

When running the Update Checksum for Emails tool on cases created in v9.5.x or earlier, the process is completed as a partial success.

Examining the scan_failed_items.csv file  in the location referenced in the job status log,  MS-Office products such as Excel, Powerpoint, Word and Outlook items show the error "FAILED: Unknown error scanning mail file.

The PstRetriever_Output.log in \\CW\V10.x.x\logs contains the error:
EsaError: 15005 WinError: 0x80004005 Unspecified errorhRes: 0x80004005 [MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED] AND //./PIPE/EsaPSTRetrieverBinaryOutputPipe

Cause

A 64 bit version of MS-Office is installed, not the MS-Office 32 bit version packaged with eDiscovery GA i(10.x) installers.  The above errors are the result of eDiscovery being unable to call the 32 bit components required to open and calculate the new checksums.

Resolution

  1. Uninstall the 64 bit MS-Office using either Programs and Feature in the Control Panel or Microsoft SaRA (Software and Recovery Assistant.
  2. Install the 32 bit version of MS-Office using the following command line silent installer:
    D:\CW\Installer\Distributions\v10.2\packages\Microsoft\Office2019PlusVLK\setup.exe /configure "D:\CW\Installer\Distributions\v10.2\packages\Microsoft\Office2019PlusVLK\config_cw.xml"

    1. Note: The above command line references the best practices location of eDiscovery installers.  Change both references to the setup.exe and config_cw.xml to the location in your environment.
    2. The command line will  return to the prompt when complete and MSIExec.exe will no longer show in Task Manager.
