Description

When managing multiple sites in the Enterprise Vault Administration Console (VAC), it is important to understand the structure and potential issues that may arise. Here are the key points and steps to managing multiple sites effectively:

  1. Understanding the Structure:
    • Each Enterprise Vault (EV) server must join an EV site during its initial configuration.
    • An EV site comprises one or more EV servers running various services and tasks to archive items from specified targets.
    • The EV directory can contain one or more sites, and this hierarchy is displayed in the VAC.
  2. Using the Administration Console:
    • The  VAC is a snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), which provides a common framework for administrative tools.
    • The console allows you to manage Sites, Services, Archiving tasks, Policies, and Targets.
    • It is recommended to avoid using multiple consoles simultaneously to prevent inconsistencies. If multiple consoles are used, press F5 to refresh the display before making any changes.
  3. Managing Multiple Sites:
    • When multiple EV sites are configured under a single EV directory, personal store management objects may appear under the wrong EV site in the VAC.
    • This issue is primarily cosmetic, and all processing, policies, and retention categories occur on the correct site.
    • Veritas has acknowledged this issue and currently has no plans to address it in the current or previous versions of the software.
  4. Address Personal Store Management Object Issues:
    • If personal store management objects appear under the wrong EV site, note that this is primarily a cosmetic issue. All processing, policies, and retention categories will still occur on the correct site.
    • Veritas has acknowledged this issue and there are no current plans to address it via a cumulative hotfix or service pack. It may be resolved in a future major revision of the software. Refer to the following links for additional information.

  1. Use Roles-Based Administration:
    • Implement  Enterprise Vault Roles Based Administration (RBA) to control the access administrators have to the VAC. This allows you to provide individual administrators with the exact permissions required for their tasks.
    • Assign individuals or groups to roles that match their responsibilities, and control role permissions without editing permissions for each administrator. Refer to the following link for additional information.

How to customize pre-defined roles in Enterprise Vault Roles Based Administration (RBA)

  1. Starting the Administration Console:
    • Log in as the Vault Service Account (VSA) initially, and then assign roles to other administrators.
    • To start the console, select Enterprise Vault > Administration Console on the Apps screen, and connect to any server in the EV site running the Directory service.

By following these steps and understanding the structure and potential issues, you can effectively manage multiple sites within the VAC.
